The best fairy lights for a bedroom are usually warm white LED copper wire lights with a dimmer and a remote. Choose USB or plug-in power for nightly use near an outlet and battery power for a headboard, mirror or shelf with no outlet, and switch them off or use a timer while you sleep.
Fairy lights give a bedroom a low, soft glow that a ceiling light cannot. Most are thin copper or silver wire with tiny LEDs along it, or a "curtain" of short strands hanging from one line. USB lights are the easy middle ground for a bedroom: any phone charger adapter powers them, and many come with a remote so you can switch them off from bed. - Length. Measure the run first. Listings give the length in metres; 1 m is about 3.3 ft.
- Light colour. Warm white suits a bedroom in the evening. Around 2700K or lower is the usual warm white; many listings do not state a Kelvin number at all.
- Dimming and remote. A dimmer lets the same lights work as decoration early in the evening and a faint glow later. A remote saves getting out of bed.
- Modes. Flashing and fading modes look festive, but a steady setting is what most people use in a bedroom. Check that the lights have one.
- Protection rating. The IP number says how well the lights resist dust and water. IP44 resists splashes, IP65 resists water jets, and IP00 means no protection: indoors and dry only.
- Wire type. Copper or silver wire bends and holds a shape, which helps around a headboard or mirror. PVC-covered strings are thicker and stiffer.
Where to hang fairy lights in a bedroom
- Behind or along the headboard: the most common spot. Wrap the frame or run a curtain light on the wall behind it.
- Around a window or curtain rod: a curtain light hung from the rod lights the whole window at night.
- Over a canopy or bed frame: drape the string loosely along the frame, never under the mattress or bedding.
- Around a mirror or shelf: short battery strings suit spots with no outlet.
- In a jar or vase: a short battery string in a glass jar makes a small night-time glow on a dresser.

Leaving fairy lights on at night

- Keep the wire, battery box and plug out from under pillows, duvets and mattresses.
- Do not use a string with bare or kinked wire, a cracked battery box or a damaged plug.
- Use the power source the listing names, and do not join strings unless the instructions say they can be joined.
- Keep indoor-only (IP00) lights away from humidifiers, plants you water and windows that collect condensation.
